Question by shellbugger: How can I go about changing the color of a specific cause’s Awareness Ribbon?
As most of you probably know, the colors of the Awareness Ribbons cover MANY different causes! For example, the yellow ribbon represents Adoptive Parents, Deployed Soldiers, Endometriosis, Equality, Hope, Liver Cancer, Liver Disease, Missing Children, Missing Persons, Suicide Prevention, Testicular Cancer, and Childhood Cancer… Is there a way that an individual can change the color for a specific cause? If so, HOW? Who or what organization do I need to address? I’m at a loss here, so I thought I’d see if anyone else has tried (or succeeded) at this same task.
Panda~
I can’t e-mail you, so I hope you return to this question to see this. Thank you for your candid response, and for the insight you gave. I will try these avenues in the hope that I succeed! For the record, I’m not sure what type of cancer your son has ~ but my best friend’s teen daughter just passed away from Osteosarcoma. This is a very rare form of cancer that, incidentally, has affected 3 girls in our small city. I am passionate about the issue, and want other parents to be aware of the disease! Granted, I was not ‘passionate’ before it affected my personal circle, but that’s often the way it works… I hope that your son continues to be a SURVIVOR and kicks his cancer to the curb! Now I’m off to do some more research based on your leads.
Thank you!

You can do anything that you please. None of the Awareness Ribbons are etched in stone . . other than possibly the pink ribbon for breast cancer, red ribbon for AIDS, and the yellow wristband for all cancers. The rest were just basically made up by various organizations or single individuals like yourself. So, I am not sure exactly what you had in mind. My son has a rare cancer so as a group we all decided on dark blue wristbands. My son’s class in high school decided to honor him with an orange wrist band with his name on it.

So, you can do just about anything you please and not worry about anything ‘official’ . . although it helps to get other people on board with it too.

I’m not really sure by your question what your intention would be here . . if you are a member of a group that wants to bring awareness to a specific type of cancer than contact members of the group for a discussion. It really depends on what you are trying to do . . if its just for you than anything goes . . if it involves a group than you need to contact members of the group for their feedback.

As an interesting tidbit . . the original color for breast cancer awareness was a peach colored ribbon. It was changed to pink when the creator of the ribbon couldn’t reach an aggreement with the Estee Lauder Cosmetic company . . they wanted to promote her ribbon for breast cancer research. The original creator, Charlotte Haley, did not want to commercialize breast cancer and refused the offer. (turns out she was right to be concerned about the marketing).

Question by Natural Rearing Girl: Any opinions on this? Please no haters!?
It is no longer medically justifiable to castrate dogs for prevention of cancer. The overwhelming mass of data to the contrary can no longer be ignored, and publications are out there so that no veterinarian can use the excuse of ignorance. Castration predisposes to highly malignant prostatic cancer. Nearly all dogs afflicted with this nasty tumor are neutered individuals. Testicular cancers are very rare and almost always benign. Perianal adenoma can be treated by castration if and when it arises. It too is benign although messy.

I have always held that male-to-male dog-to-dog aggression is the only justification for castration. Many owners wish to castrate their male puppies thinking that all sorts of behavioral problems will be solved. Such as roaming. Most of these behaviors can only be altered by husbandry and training. Others are convinced that by castrating their dog, they will be doing the right thing regarding ‘population control’ – the fact is, males do not have puppies, females do. Castration is the search for the “quick fix” for people who don’t wish to invest the time and effort necessary to care for their dogs properly. And, it may help; if not, the obesity which develops may achieve the desired effect.

With large breeds, early castration often results in an animal with an insufficient breadth of chest for orthopedic health. Seeing the number of giant breeds that I do, I am very aware of the tragic effects of castration on young males. The narrow chests which result are inadequate to support the weight that so many neutered animals, male or female, put on. These dogs then have to develop a ‘toe-out’ stance, with valgus deformity of the carpus, in an attempt to broaden their base for weight bearing. Once you’ve seen the harm caused by this practice in person, you quickly change that ‘knee-jerk’ reaction so often seen, of ‘neuter everything that breathes’. If you do choose to castrate your male dog, by all means wait until he is at least one year old for small to medium size breeds, or at least 2 years old for giant breeds.

And your question is? It seems like more of a lecture to me.

You’re missing a whole lot there and it seems like propaganda to justify the show dog circuit to me. Urine crystals, bladder problems, cystitis and, hello, bruising, are major issues with males that don’t get fixed. As they get older in particular they can suffer serious damage just from bruising.

Behavior issues aren’t to be ignored either. Consider how the dog feels: Is he happier feeling aggressive toward other males and too protective and hormonal or is he happier without those feelings?

As for the breadth of chest, that is just absolutely untrue! 100%. In fact, it is only a problem in terms of showing according to the breed ideal. And seriously, since when it is normal for any dog to be the size of a small horse? We bred them to be this way, which is unhealthy and unnatural. They will develop well, with good and strong bones, better flexibility and a better immune system. They live longer (check the facts on that!) and have far less cancer overall.

Question by Health C: recommend a heart attack/stroke prevention/remedy and a heart specialist in arizona.?
my short story…..

maternal family history….diabetes, cancers of many sorts(young siblings n old relatives), glaucoma, weak kidney, extreme ecxema, n a few other things.

paternal history…possible digestion problems bc some have acne/skin problems. dad finally died of a heart attack, his sisters/siblings/cousins died of the same thing.
they were all young, dad was only 42.
my sister is 47 n has had congenital heart disease for years. she is in a wheelchair, on oxygen, n got a defibrillator implant last year.

over the last few years i have had off and on high blood pressure. it was minor and i did not always need medication. i have had small symptoms of heart trouble for about 10 years. it never prevented me from doing anything and no doctor gave me any medications. about 10 years ago i noticed shortness of breath w the stair climbing, so i lost weight to accomodate. i have an extremely small frame so i went from what looked like average to skinny. that helped a lot. i did not associate the shortness of breath w anything else. there were bouts w stress and i lived in a house that poisoned me w various pollutions. the gase hot water heater was never properly hooked up and the vents were never properly cleaned. i breathed that for almost 15 years before i figured it out. i am sure that had something to do w my deterioration.

early last year i had strange things like small tightness in the jaw joint from time to time and the throat closing like a suffication/choking. i had to concentrate to squeeze down air. i never knew how to quite explain that but the doctors dismissed it. once i was eating and suddenly could not swallow no matter how hard i concentrated.

last year i went to a heart specialist w pain in my left arm. the office was horrible. they depended solely on a stress test but they could nt get the wires hooked up right. plus some girl was in training and did not know what she was doing. the supervisor came in to help but she was no better. when the visit was over i was upset because they told me nothing was wrong. just come back next year. i tried to convince them otherwise but i did not do a good job. i did not think to go to another specialist. months went by. eventually i walked down my hallway and suddenly out of the blue felt nauseous then faint. i did not faint, but since i did not know what it was i was puzzled with the episode.

about june i started to have serious shortness of breath and problems w high blood pressure. my doctor left the country and i did not find a replacement. i had daily headaches n it seems that i had them so bad it could have been a small stroke. maybe i am paranoid, but something did go wrong. the doctors have no idea what i describe to them. i am gettting upset just thinking about it but no one took this seriously so i trusted them and thought i was in better shape than i really was.

with horrific stress, divorce, job problems, financial difficulty (the usual stress killers), etc. i find that i have symptoms that i have never encountered before. pressure/light tightness from head to toe on the left side. turned to burning on the left side. flushed cheeks. dull tingling/numbness of the lower face/tongue/lips, dizziness and uncontrolled hbp. the numbers range from the low 100′s to 160+. before it was far over that. when all this started the numbers were only about 125 and i thought that was horrible. it changes from minute to minute even with a stronger medication. the dull pain in my arm moved up to near my armpit then it moved to the left side of my upper chest. i try to keep it as low as possible by drinking hot tea or soup. it drops a few points (ie: from 160 to 140) but i can not seem to keep it under 140. excercise does not seem to help. my heart pounds excessively and has done so for about 4 months. it does not matter if the pressure rate is down or not.

all i take is hbp medicine and vitamins one time each day. i saw a new heart specialist who is just having me wait for testing. while i wait, i made an appointment w a 3rd heart specialist. in the meantime i asked my existing doctor (2nd) what can be done n i was told to go the ER. no thanks. the bill used to be only 50.00 for ER but now the visits are now close to 1k with insurance. the health care system i am in told me that the doctors don’t contract with them anymore. after insurance, i still have a large bill.

so here i am asking you what i can do to keep my hbp under control and to prevent a heart attack and stroke. i am about 50 years old, female, over 5feet 7inches tall, small/skinny frame and i could not take any more medical/financial trauma. i never smoked/drank or did drugs but i find myself taking tylenol every day for the headaches. i never like junk food. as a baby my favorite foods were vegetables. i dont eat a perfect diet becasue of the high food prices. my kitchen has poultry, canned leafy greens, canned beans, canned tuna, canned beets, rice, dried

Honestly it sounds like you are making yourself sick stressing your health issues. You really need to lighten your stress load! Try a small glass of red wine nightly. If you are against wine try a glass of welches sparkling red grape juice. It is relaxing and great for the heart. My husband has been able to go off of HB medicine thanks to the one glass of red wine a night thing.

Question by Daniel: Will HPV Vaccine work for males?
I understand most of the news is centered around prevention of cervical cancer in females. But suppose I have a girlfriend already infected with the HPV virus… if we were to marry someday, am I doomed to contract this disease or can this vaccine protect me?

Best answer:

Answer by Dixie B
It should work the same for males. Males certainly can catch the virus, so it is worth trying to prevent it. I know of at least 2 who have married after being infected as teens and to my knowledge, the disease stopped there.

Question by life: ? OK to remove normal uterus, cervix, ovaries, breasts in a middle aged woman with children- to avoid cancers?
Cancer kills.

Common female cancers are those of breasts, ovaries, uterus and cervix.

These are female organs vital to have children and needed in the reproductive phase of a woman’s life.

In middle age by 50 years of age, the use of these organs becomes less for the functions above. At the same time, the same organs start to develop malignancies, thereby reducing her life span, quality of life for her children and increased medical expenditure.

Question is: would society see these organs -when once non-functional (menopause) -to be disposable? Same applicable to a high risk woman at a younger age.

Where does vanity end and life continue?

Until we have a cure, prevention by any means could be a life saver.

I’d say that unless you were at risk for these cancers…ie family history, several first-degree relatives have these cancers or you have the genetic marker for these types of cancers, I’d leave well enough alone & take my chances. If on the other hand, you do have these risks I would do lots of research & try to come to the best decision I could for myself.

Question by Sanskia: What the hell is up with the world..?
What the hell is up with the world.
Ive been reading about cancer and preventions.
They’re all baloney.
Ive read one, where it says pizza is actually good for you because it ‘protects’ against cancer because the tomato sauce contains lycopene. It even says it’s proven that pizza cuts colon cancer risk by 26%, oesophageal cancer by 59%, and mouth cancer by 34%.
Yet, diet experts reckon that pizza is a big no-no because it makes us fat or obese and gives us lack of fitness.
The scientists that prove that pizza cuts cancer risks (above), reckon we should eat pizza in ‘moderation’.

Whats your view on this?
I agree totally with all your answers. But some diet Experts do say that pizza makes us fat regardless of the amount. I guess they are wrong. Everything is okay in moderation. Thanks everybody !
