Answer by spiritwise333
I agree. We should be allowed to investigate alternative treatments. And much more research money needs to be allocated to discovering natural cures. However, many people believe that there are already alternative cures for most cancers available but that they have been ruthlessly suppressed by the FDA. Many people also believe the FDA is just a puppet of the pharmaceutical companies. Cancer treatment is a multi-billion dollar industry.
There is little or no money to be made from alternative medicines because most are plant based or made from simple chemical compounds that cannot be patented. Without a patent the drug companies cannot make the compound exclusively and and then they cannot charge outrageous prices for their products. There would be no reason for a drug company to spend a lot of money on developing a herbal cancer treatment product for instance, when we can grow the herbs in our back yard.

Medical doctors who practise alternative medicine are severely harassed by the AMA, (whom some believe to be enforcers for the drug companies). A staggering number of alternative MDs have had their licenses revoked by their state and provincial medical boards because they threatened the status quo.

Question by Exhilarating, isn’t it?: CHRISTIANS: Is choosing not to take cancer treatment b/c Im ready to die considered a sin (suicide)?
The breakdown is this:
I was abused my entire life. I have developed depression, anxiety, and severe OCD due to some things Ive experienced. Someone I knew a very long time snapped and attempted to kill her three kids, actually killing her three year old. Since then I began having harm OCD thoughts. UNWANTED thoughts/urges to hurt/kill people. I’ll repeat that… COMPLETELY UNWANTED. I dont want to hurt anybody but it is absolute mental torment living with these thoughts and urges. I have tried different medications to no avail, I have tried therapy and it did nothing… I even resorted to checking myself into a mental hospital voluntarily and that didnt help. I used to be an incredibly strong person, mentally and physically. Now I cant work… I can hardly function in daily life because of these thoughts and the depression. Im in debt. And I have a 5 year old that I am terrified of being around simply because i want her to be safe. I cant trust anybody… No one will be with a trainwreck like me.

Sorry for the long intro but I was diagnosed with severe cervical dysplasia. A year ago my pap smear was completely clear. My doctor says at the rate the cells are multiplying it will most definitely turn into cervical cancer. I feel like i cant do this anymore. I cant even offer my daughter a good life, Im miserable and making everyone around me miserable. I cant stand the thought of never seeing my child again but I cant stand the fears of hurting somebody and ending up in prison either.

Do you think its a sin to not seek treatment and allow myself to die? Its not suicide. I dont want to go to hell… that scares me too. I am in misery. Your opinions please.

PS… please dont refer me to a suicide prevention hotline. Been there, done that. Its appreciated, but please just answer the question.Thanks. And also, I do go to a spirit-filled church. I have accepted Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior.

Question by ♥ShinichiRanConan♥: What are the symptoms of brain cancer?
Add. details: I’m always exposed to too much radiation. I’m always in front of the computer. That’s for hours. I don’t even take time for a break. I no longer watch tv but that was just recently. But before when I watch, it’s also for hours, maybe 4-5 hours straight, again, without letting my eyes rest even for a minute. After I finished watching, my head pounds so hard. It aches, not so much but it’s like a hammer is being pounded on my head. I’m not sure if it’s anything related to brain cancer/tumor. Maybe cancer in the eyes (is there such a thing?). Is there a possibility that I will be blind or worse cancer?? I’m not really having headaches now, just rarely. I’m just curious. I need your advice so I would know if I have to lessen my time in being exposed to radiation. Prevention is better than cure, right?
I wear eyeglasses. Lenses?? Last time I have my eyeglasses made, the other 500 plus, the other, IDK. They’re not the same though. Doctor said more chances to have eye cataract. Last eye check: Dec 2007. First time I had glasses 9 years old. First time my vision became blurry, 8 years old. So, whaccha think?
I forgor to add. I’m 17 years old. Thanks.

Question by pdooma: Should the government be funding porn to prevent prostate cancer?
Studies show that ejaculation 3x a week help reduce prostate cancer by 15%. In fact, according to Australian studies, the more a man ejaculates between age 20 and 50, the lower his risk for prostate cancer will be.

Since we cannot assume every guy out there has a wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend willing to have sex 3x a week, nor can we assume that every guy has the funds to pay for his own porn in order to masturbate (we don’t want the poor to suffer needlessly), I propose that government should provide free or low cost porn in the quest to prevent prostate cancer. Heck, they pay for everything else.

Your thoughts?

I’m sure this will be reported, but since I used all medical terms, shouldn’t we take this as a serious discussion of cancer and not just of smutty sex?

Question by John: How can you avoid cancer and what is the state of cancer research today?
I’ve heard a little bit about treatments for the different types of cancer and the efforts in curing cancer. (Are there any types of cancer that have been cured? In short, what’s the progress on that?)

I need help in putting it all into perspective.

I’ve heard that in the 21st century, we focus on prevention as the best cure.

For example:
We brush our teeth, use fluoride, tooth floss, and mouth wash to prevent cavities and gum disease.
We use sunblock to avoid burns.
We eat a healthy diet to avoid hunger and malnutrition.
etc.

What are some tips or resource regarding how to prevent cancer? Things to keep in mind on a daily basis?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can clear this up for me!

Question by elizabethNYC83: With a family history of breast cancer, when’s the best time for me to get my first mammogram?
2 years ago both my mother and aunt (her sister) got diagnosed with breast cancer. My mother was 55 at the time and my aunt was 59. The only other case of breast cancer in my family was my great-grandmother who died of it at the age of 44. So it’s obvious that there might be a stronger likelihood of my chances of the disease as well. After seeing what my mother and aunt had to go through, I’ve become wholly aware of this cancer and am not sure when’s the best time to start being proactive with my breast health.

I’m 25 years old and don’t know when’s the best time for me to get my first mammogram. I’ve heard that 40 is the typical age, but should I be more towards getting one at 35? or even possibly 30?

Unfortunately, the highest rate of breast cancer in the US is located on Long Island, NY and sure enough, that’s where myself and my family are all from.

I’m scared to what my possibilities are for getting breast cancer and don’t exactly know what’s the best method of early detection and prevention.

Any advice would be so helpful. Thank you.

I would suggest that you talk with your doctor and get his/her recommendations after you explain your family history and your concerns. Ask him to be directed to a genetic counselor who can explain everything – there is alot of information which can easily be confused as it depends on your particular family history, age at diagnosis, etc, etc.

With that said, my doctor recommended that I start getting mammograms at age 30 and do monthly breast self exams because my mother had breast cancer. She said it is important to have a clean baseline mammogram to compare any changes against it with future mammograms. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 49 and at age 62 in the opposite breast….and my great Aunt (my mothers Aunt) was also diagnosed with breast cancer before 50 and then ten years later developed it in the opposite breast as well….also another one of her relatives died from ovarian cancer in her later years. Due to our family history, my mother was tested for the genetic breast cancer genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 to see if she was a carrier of this gene mutation. The test came back negative…which means that she didn’t have the breast cancer gene and therefore could not have passed it down to me so there was no need for me to be tested. However, the genetic counselor was very quick to mention that just because we don’t have this genetic mutation, that doesn’t mean I am out of the woods and I should be adamant about checking for lumps and getting my annual mammograms. He mentioned that just because there are only two genetic breast cancer mutations they have identified (which we don’t carry) and test for, there is still a chance that there are other breast cancer genetic mutations that have not been identified yet and therefore are not tested for. Also, he stated that anytime your mother has breast cancer, that automatically puts you in a higher risk category regardless of whether or not you have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene. Basically, he wanted to make sure I get checked and not look at the negative BRCA test as a get out of cancer free card. As I’m sure you know, early detection is very important.

EDIT>>>I wanted to add something….If your family tests negative for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic mutation, your risk of developing breast cancer is still doubled simply because your mother has breast cancer. If you have two first degree relatives (mother, sister or daughter) with breast cancer then your risk is increased five fold. Here is the article from ACS which details breast cancer risks. It discusses family history factors as well as BRCA genetic mutations. http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/content/CRI_2_4_2X_What_are_the_risk_factors_for_breast_cancer_5.asp

Here is another article with a little further clarification on BRCA testing – http://www.breastcancer.org/risk/genetic/test_normal.jsp . It states that if your family CARRIES THE GENE and you do not – then your risk is about normal. However, if your family TESTS NEGATIVE AND YOU TEST NEGATIVE and you have a family history of breast cancer (particularly at a younger age) then affected members may have an inherited genetic abnormality that has not yet been identified. In this scenario, it is suggested you have start mammograms at age 25 or 10 years before the earliest age at which a family member was diagnosed—whichever comes first.

Question by Skeptic: Why is there a search of a cancer cure?
Isn’t prevention better than a cure?

I discovered recently that the rates of cancer are highly correlated with the consumption of animal proteins (T. Colin Campbell). It appears that there are environmental triggers, but that cancer growth correlates with animal protein consumption. This fact is consistent with scientific epistemological studies over the past 40 years.

If this is true, then we could reduce the incidents of cancer by an order of magnitude by changing our diet to be whole food vegan.

This would bankrupt food and drug companies, by the way.
Mass media has promoted the concept that cancer is caused by the consumption of fats (which correlates with animal protein). Media also promotes the idea that cancers are genetic. However, T. Colin Campbell showed that genetics is only about 3% to 4% of the effects. Your body, and a healthy diet can combat the growth of cancers.
I expected industry paid bloggers, lo_mcg.

The conclusions of “The China Study” is consistent with research over the last 40 years. There is no controversy except that created by industry. It is an indisputable correlation between cancers and the consumption of animal proteins. The triggers are environmental pollution, but cancers grow through animal proteins.

If the media were not influenced by drug and food industry money, I’d expect them to promote a vegan diet. Instead, only 1% of the population is vegan.
You should distinguish between instigation of cancer and growth of cancer. Instigation is due to the faulty cell reproduction (due to chemical, physical, or natural damage). The body normally repairs without incident.

When it doesn’t, the cancer feeds on animal proteins, especially casein (milk protein). If you research this, you will be surprised at how strong the scientific evidence is. Our system is too busy making money to pay attention to this simple fact.

Not all cancers are caused by intake of animal products. Some are cause by other environmental factor, including sunshine! There is NO obvious reason why men should get prostate cancer, yet 100% of men over the age of 80 will have it. And prostate cancer IS fatal — if old age doesn’t get your first!

ONLY those cancers which stem directly form “personal habits” can be prevented — some cancers are caused by too many fats in the diet, some ar caused by smoking, and some are caused by sunbathing and tanning beds. but the REST of them, the large majority, are caused by conditions beyond human control.
