Question by : Is it better to get informed and raise awareness than to get into competitions over men’s and women’s health?
Here’s something guys need to know and need to discuss with their doctors. And ladies, inform your fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons too.

http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2010/08/11/129128217/doctors-are-slow-to-prescribe-pill-to-prevent-prostate-cancer

A generic drug called finasteride reduces the risk of prostate cancer by 25 percent, according to a 2003 study of 18,000 men.

But doctors apparently don’t believe it, misunderstand the findings, or just don’t know about it.

Almost two-thirds of urologists and 80 percent of primary care doctors in the Veterans Health Administration system, say they never prescribe finasteride to prevent prostate cancer. The survey, involving 1,525 doctors, appears in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.

When researchers asked them why, half said they didn’t know the drug could prevent prostate cancer. And more than half said they were worried that men taking finasteride had a higher risk of developing more aggressive tumors.

That second concern arises from the first results of that 2003 study, called the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial. It seemed to show that finasteride, which blocks the cancer-stimulating effects of testosterone, lowered the overall rate of prostate cancer by 25 percent but increased the risk of more dangerous tumors by 27 percent.

But in 2008, the researchers refuted from that finding, after looking more closely at the data along with biopsies of the tumors that occurred during the study. The new analysis showed finasteride didn’t really raise the risk of high-grade tumors, it just makes tests for tumor grade more sensitive.
It doesn’t matter if anyone else cares. If doctors aren’t informed, WE have to be informed and we have to inform OTHER men so THEY can bring these findings to their doctor’s attention.
This is important information. I’m not sure why no one is starring it. Guys, if a men’s movement is about anything other than knocking feminists, it should be about letting each other know these things so we can take charge of our health!

What is the use in getting into an argument over biology? There is none. Why don’t many feminists get this?

Question by Nadejda V: Please can you check my essay about health issues Thanks?
1. “Prevention is better than cure”. Out of a country’s health budget, a large proportion should be diverted from treatment to spending on health education and preventative measures. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? (Cambridge IELTS 2)
A lot of economists claim that it would more economical for the state if its citizens were healthier and did not suffer from serious diseases. That’s why the government should pay due consideration to enlightening people about leading healthy lifestyles.
For example, a lot of health-oriented programs have been launched over the last ten years in the Russian Federation. They encourage people to live healthy lives. These programs are supported and funded by the governments. Top-level scientists in the field of medicine explain all repercussions causes by smoking, drinking spirits, overeating, eating junk food and so on. According to the statistics, since the launch of these programs expenditures on health care have gone down considerably.
The other way of encouraging people to live healthy lives is newspapers and social advertisements.
It has been proved by scientists that there is a link between cancer and smoking. People who do not smoke less suffer from cancer less . For example, recently there have been an experiment. Two hundred people addicted to smoking were offered to watch a social advertisement about smoking during for two weeks. This social advertisement contained harrowing videos and photos showing the effect of smoking on people’s bodies. After the experiment almost four fifths of testees gave up smoking.
Moreover, schools are going to have compulsory health in the curriculum.
To summarize, the population is the main reason of existence for any state. A healthy population can be describes as a driving force of the economy. The more people are healthy the more money will be saved and can be spent on other aspects of life. Taking into consideration the above facts the government certainly should allocate some money to educate the public about the consequences of having unhealthy habits.

Your essay was pretty good. I changed a few words, corrected a few wrong words and put the required space between paragraphs when not indenting a paragraph. If you are indenting each paragraph, the space between paragraphs should not be used.

Question by : For or against health care reform, why is abortion considered part of health care?
Healthcare is about prevention of disease and helping keep disease at bay. Healthcare aims to stop cancer, fix ED and help people live as full a life as possible. I understand how infertility is covered becuase it a failure for the body to perform properly. Why is abortion, ie. the body performing properly , considered a condition to treat? It is only thing I can see in medicine that prevents the healthy body from doing what a healthy body does.

Best answer:

Answer by cargo pilot
Abortion is normally an elective procedure, in that under normal circumstances, there is no medical reason other than the mother wants one. Insurance companies will not pay for elective procedures. As you say, the body is functioning normally when a couple engages in intercourse and a baby is formed. The body is functioning in a perfectly normal way.

In my view, to consider the desire to obtain an abortion when it is not a medical necessity, is no different than the desire to enhance one’s appearance with a nose job, except, again in my view, it is the willful taking of an innocent human life for the convenience of another.

I am not an insurance expert, but I believe that most, if not all insurance policies will pay for abortion when the doctor renders the decision that the Mother’s life is at risk, but do not consider convenience a medical necessity. Should we have socialized health care, (which I oppose for other reasons), I personally would be fine with using the same criteria that is currently accepted as medical necessity to save the life and health of the mother and pay for an abortion. Abortion for convenience should not be paid for by taxpayers, any more than a boob-job.

Question by mary: How is this Health Plan that Congress behind closed doors going to effect St Judes Hospital that treat?
children with cancer? It is a wonderful hospital that will not turn any child away that has cancer regardless of the ability to pay.
I do not trust Congress that is creating a plan behind closed doors.. What are they hiding? Where is the transparency that was promised? Hey, this is serious. Congress should be made to be held accountable . An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure..We need to know what they have up their sleeves and now, not when it is to late to do something about some dirty trick.
sahaaraj thank you for your answer. What obama said he would be transparent in this administration and would be on C=Span with these bills, and plans..He has not done so. We all need to know what is going on as we are not sheep being let to the slaughter.

Question by Reagan ’12: Would you consider supporting the Patients Choice Act instead of nationalizing the health care system?
Some notable items the bill calls for:

Creation of marketplaces to offer insurance choice. Make more private insurance options available to everyone without creating a public insurance system.

$ 2,290 tax credit per individual; $ 5,710 per family.

Investment in chronic disease prevention for diabetes, cancer, etc.
Medicare, Medicaid reform; will attempt to get people off people off of Medicaid and into private insurers.

Creation of independent health courts to resolve malpractice disputes outside the current system.

who wants to be told what doctor you can go to. the only ones who need insurance are the ones who work and their company does not provide insurance all welfare people get free medical along with their kids. so this has no dealings with the non workers. their voice should not be heard.

Question by teh_wolf: Good oral health to aid in the prevention of cancers?
Hey everyone!
I have quite a scientific question that I’ve been thinking about lately.I like to think I understand quite a bit concerning the world of cancers, since I’ve done a fair amount of recreational research on the subject. Mind you, I by no means consider myself an expert by any standards, but I think I understand the basics.
My knowledge about the world of dentistry is quite limited, however. Here is what I think I understand about good oral health:
1. That regular brushing and flossing can aid in the control of bacterias in the mouth, thereby limiting plaque buildup in the mouth.
2. That the decrease in bacteria would minimize the need for the body to target the mouth as a threat of infection, and
3. That, since the body would not need to target the mouth, it would be able to focus on more pressing matters in the body itself, i.e. fighting infection elsewhere.

With these three (dare I say) assumed facts, good oral hygiene would aid the immune system in fighting disease within the body?

And if this is accurate, wouldn’t good oral hygiene (and hygiene in general) strengthen the immune system, and therefore allow the body to detect and destroy dangerous carcinomas before they can propagate and metastasize throughout the rest of the body?

Additionally, if all of the above conditions are held to be factual, then the same case would apply for dogs, cats, and other animals as well, correct?

Ultimately, I’m asking this question to determine if poor oral health (which is found to be more and more common in family pets) can be linked in any way to the malignant tumors that plague dogs in their later years, when these oral problems start to become an issue. I’ve seen articles that link dangerous cancers in he body with infection and a weakened immune system (http://www.newswise.com/articles/new-perspectives-on-cancer-and-the-immune-system, for example) and the connection between poor oral health and infection is common knowledge. So could it be a valid, if yet untested or uncertified, claim that there could be a connection between cancer and the infection that comes with poor oral health?

Sorry for being so wordy, but I’d rather people understand what I’m asking than assume, and I get some answer to a question I didn’t ask, ya know?

I appreciate any and all information about this subject anyone can bring to light! Thank you!!

@Waytootiny:
Aah, I see. So unless a legion is opened up in the mouth, then the bacteria will remain in the mouth; additionally, periodontal diseases in the mouth can create legions. Now, would the swallowing of excess bacteria buildup in the mouth pose any threat? Or since it is part of the digestive tract (which is an external system, as you have mentioned), would it be destroyed and passed through the body, unless legions existed in the stomach, esophagus, intestines, or other digestive structures, as well?

Best answer:

Answer by Waytootiny
The fundamental problem with your proposal is that the mouth is considered an “external” system, as is the entire digestive tract. In other words unless is is cut into, it remains sealed off from the rest of the body. Therefore bacteria in the mouth and digestive tract is not considered a threat to the body’s immune system. Dental and periodontal problems can lead to lesions forming just like a cut on the outer skin and an appropriate immune response is initiated. It is when you get these lesions that oral bacteria can enter the blood supply and then multiply and spread, this is why chronic dental disease can spread bacteria to the heart and cause heart disease.
